I spotted the Bolt Barbers On Safari vintage mobile barbershop at the recent Lazr trade show at L.A. Live this week and had a chance to catch up over root beer with founder and chief barber Mohawk Matt (a.k.a. Matt Berman).
The 26-foot 1954 Spartan Manor Aircraft TrailerCoach is the third in Berman’s chain of barbershops–but it’s the only one on wheels. In addition to the downtown Los Angeles flagship on Spring Street, a Bolt Barbershop opened last year on Melrose in West Hollywood.
The Spartan features lots of original details—like the wood paneling and the curvilinear fridge, but Berman also added several crucial upgrades like air-conditioning and new flooring. The main room has two vintage barbershop chairs Berman found in the Valley.
Bolt Barbers on Safari was as Lazr fresh from filming for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, which included adding an 8-foot dorsal fin to the trailer.
In addition to taking the trailer to special events like Lazr, the mobile barbershop will head over to the University of Southern California on Tuesdays and then out to 29 Palms on Sundays.
