Teenage Mutant Ninja sneakerheads, rejoice! Fila just released some limited-edition sneakers inspired by “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
But these are no puff-patched, catch-phrase-emblazoned kiddie kicks. These are for grownups—albeit grownups who grew up with TMNT and are ready to geek out on all the inside-Ninja details.
The Fila FX-100 comes with interchangeable ankle straps in four colors— blue, red, purple and orange—to correspond with the colors of each turtle’s mask—plus a little hidden detail about each turtle’s weapon of choice. That way you can subtly let people know if you’re feeling wise (Leonardo), mischievous (Raphael), intellectual (Donatello) or hungry (Michelangelo). In March, Fila will introduce another style inspired by Shredder The style features “metal lace tips and silver ‘cage’ memory foam” to represent the arch-villain’s armor and mask.
The collection is released in partnership with Nickelodeon, which recently rebooted the series, based on the 1984 comic book by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
The ’80s-era comic book was followed by animated TV series, which ran from 1987 to 1996, a series of live-action and animated feature films, a 2003 updated TV show and tons and tons and tonsof licensed products including toys, video games and other merchandise.
Nickelodeon bought the rights in 2009 and released a one-hour special last September. The cable network will host a “Total Turtle Takeover” marathon tonight.
If you’re looking for something to wear with your TMNT sneakers—might I suggested this hat, available on Etsy for $15. (And yes, the hat comes in all four Ninja colors.)
Cowabunga, indeed.
